The top five sports figures born in Minnesota

5. Herb Brooks
While he was a decent hockey player on the ice, Herb Brooks is a Minnesota sports star for what he did on the bench. Brooks led the unheralded United States hockey team to the “Miracle On Ice” in 1980 beating the heavily favored Soviet team in route to the Gold Medal. What people don’t know is that he led the 2002 US Men’s hockey team to a silver medal, their first medal since “The Miracle”.

4. Roger Maris
Sure: he may be known primarily for his 61 home run season in 1961, but Maris won two MVP awards and was one of the best defensive fielder’s of his time.

3. Lindsey Vonn
Yes, she won a gold and a silver at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games, but, arguably more impressively, Vonn is the only American to ever win three Overall World Cup Skiing titles.

2. Paul Molitor
While not the flashiest player on the field, Molitor finished his career with over 3,300 hits, 1,300 RBI’s and 500 stolen bases.

1. Dave Winfield
Over a 23 season career, Dave Winfield played for six teams, had over 3,100 hits, 460 home runs and 1,800 RBI. In addition, he was a 14 time All Star and won Seven Gold Gloves.
