The History of Minnnesota From 1849

Minnesota became a territory in 1849, and was later added as an official state on May 11, 1858. The economy of the state grew after the Civil and Dakota wars with Minnesota’s fertile farm lands and logging opportunities. The state was among the first to send troops in support of Union efforts during the Civil War.

The Saint Anthony Falls provided power for the state and milling became Minnesota’s main financial support. Industry grew larger for the state when iron ore was found in 1884. The mineral was mined from open pits beginning with the Soudan Mine and then sent to steel mills on the Great Lakes. Additional mines were opened supplying the need for iron ore. Ports in Duluth and Two Harbors were built for this purpose and both cities grew with the industry.

During the Great Depression layoffs brought financial struggles to Minnesota. Fortunately, relief came in the form of New Deal programs provided by the federal government. Later industry grew in the state from beginning computer companies such as Control Data, Sperry Rand and Cray.

Culture became a focus in the Twin Cities and the Guthrie Theater, Walker Art Center and the Minnesota Orchestra were added for this purpose.
